Aaron’s Student Success Story

Services Used: Test prep, homework help, Learning Difficulties

The Results: 291/300 on CPS Selective Enrollment exam

Aaron*, an eighth-grade student, originally began tutoring with WorldWise Tutoring for homework help. Aaron’s Learning Difficulties—ADHD and Executive Functioning—made it challenging for him to complete his homework and achieve academic success. Soon we were helping him with test prep for his high school placement exams.

Here’s how we worked with Aaron to overcome these obstacles:

Aaron’s tutor developed an after-school routine to maintain the habit of keeping an organized binder and a completed planner. His tutor also taught him how to plan his time in an effective way utilizing his agenda and a graphic organizer, so that he could complete short-term and long-term tasks more efficiently.

Once an academic routine was put in place and Aaron’s grades were raised, the focus of tutoring turned to preparation for the high school placement exams. First a diagnostic test was given to assess Aaron’s levels of need. During each tutoring session, new content and strategies were taught using practice tests and supplementary resources. A homework assignment assessing comprehension of topics covered was assigned at the end of each session and then reviewed at the beginning of the next session.

Through continual reinforcement and assessment, Aaron’s proficiency level steadily rose and he achieved academic success. Ultimately, not only did Aaron score in the top 10 percentile on the NWAE Map and the HSPT, he attained a score of 291 (96 percentile) on the 8th grade CPS Selective Enrollment exam and was accepted to his first-choice high school. Aaron is eager to start classes at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in the fall.

Here’s what his mom had to say about us:

“WorldWise Tutoring has helped my two sons (ages 16 and 14) with Executive Functioning skills, all academic subjects, and test preparation for the MAPP, high school entrance exams, and ACT prep for the past 3 years. With their help, both of my sons have been accepted to prestigious high schools (St. Ignatius and Whitney Young). I would describe our tutor as patient, and I would recommend WorldWise Tutoring because they will help make the necessary changes for your child to be more successful.” ~ Diane
