Re-imagine the Educational System

Re-imagine the Educational System

Now is the time to re-imagine the educational system! When the pandemic hit the US, things changed overnight. For the first few months, we were just making due. But now we are past the time of uncertainty. Now, more than ever, ensuring student engagement in remote or hybrid/blended formats is critical to keep students on track with their learning.

Like many changes as a result of Shelter in Place, this is providing us with an amazing opportunity for growth and reimagining the educational system. This ought to be a time that we focus on shifting the traditional educational system of rote memorization and adult-led learning to more student-focused exploration. We should use this as an opportunity to teach students time management, self-assessment, mindfulness, focus, entrepreneurial mindset, and creative problem-solving – all of which can be wrapped into the essential core curriculum.

As a former teacher, I understand that parents cannot become the teachers, just as teachers cannot become the tutors. Instead of trying to keep things “normal” by replicating the current school experience at home via Zoom meetings, we need to take this opportunity to reshape the current educational process. We need experts in experiential learning to drive education down a new path, teaching students the evergreen skills to navigate our rapidly changing world. It’s important for us to push students to rise to challenges and see themselves as agents of change in their own lives, communities, and the world. We need to inspire students to find their unique voices and take action. We need to provide students with opportunities to collaborate with other students and engage with their communities to problem-solve, innovate, and think critically about the world around them.

Learning and Life Skills Goals:

While many schools are choosing between 3 tracks (in-person, homeschool, or a hybrid of the 2), we should be focused on instilling in our children the necessary knowledge and skills to better prepare for the real world where it is predicted that this blended format will become our “new normal.” We should ask ourselves: What are the main learning goals? And we ought to think beyond what is taught in traditional schools to what is essential for success in college, careers, and beyond. What do I want our children to learn? I want them to speak, write, read, and comprehend well. They need to have a solid understanding of the core subjects – and to enjoy learning them. Beyond this, I want them to have inquisitive minds, to relate what they learn to the real world, to self-assess and self-monitor for self-growth. I want them to be a part of the change. To nourish the next generation of leaders, we ought to take the changes forced upon us as an opportunity to assess and improve.

WorldWise Tutoring has been taking a “Personalized Approach to Lifelong Learning” since its inception. Our goal has always been to help students with the underlying learning and life skills so they no longer “need” a tutor. Now is the time to reimagine the educational system and bring this methodology to light and share it with others. Imagine a world in which our children advocate for themselves, take initiative in their lives, enjoy and seek out new learning opportunities, and constantly question and self-reflect. With the current schooling system totally disrupted, now is the time to rebuild something better.
